The ongoing pandemic has changed how many government agencies do business, and the Social Security Administration is no exception. Many claimants and Social Security recipients have questions about their benefits. During these perilous times, it is crucial that you have access to important information in a timely and appropriate manner. Here are some tips to help you better understand the current procedures recently put in place at the Social Security Administration:

Will Receiving Unemployment Benefits Affect My Social Security Benefits?

If you received unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, you must inform the Social Security Administration as soon as possible. Unemployment compensation is considered unearned income and must be reported. These benefits will have little or no effect on those who already receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits but could have an impact for individuals who have a claim pending that has not yet been approved. In addition, the receipt of Unemployment Compensation will have an impact for those currently receiving SSI and those who applied for SSI but have not yet been approved.

Will Deadlines Be Extended by the Social Security Administration During the COVID-19 Health Crisis?

The Social Security Administration is being more flexible about deadlines during the pandemic. They have stated that they are making every effort possible to allow claimants the time and opportunity to submit requested documents safely.

  • If you were asked to contact Social Security by a certain date, do not physically go to the office. Business can be conducted by mail or by phone, and in certain circumstances, online.
  • The Social Security Administration has also stated that it is doing its best to extend the good cause for late filing policy. This approach will allow the SSA to extend deadlines for submissions, including appeals that may have been filed beyond the stated deadline.

Where Can Claimants Find Updates on the SSA’s COVID-19 Emergency Policies?

Why Hiring an Attorney Matters for Your SSDI Claim

Millions of Americans rely on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits to cover essential living costs when they can no longer work due to a medical condition. Unfortunately, the application process is complex, and only about 30% of initial SSDI applications are approved. That means most people face delays, denials, and financial uncertainty at a time when they can least afford it. Adding an SSDI lawyer early in the process can prevent common errors and ensure all deadlines are met.…
