The United States Department of Education has a program called Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge, which allows disabled individuals who are unable to pay off their student loans to apply for total debt forgiveness. TPD Discharge

A TPD discharge forgives any debt that has resulted from the following student loan programs: 

• William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan
• Federal Family Education Loan
• Federal Perkins Loan

You can also discharge TEACH Grant service obligations under this program, but you must provide evidence of your total and permanent disability in order to qualify for TPD discharge. 

How You Can Prove that You Are Totally & Permanently Disabled

In order to qualify for a TPD discharge, you must provide the Department of Education with documents that prove you are disabled and unable to pay off student debt or complete your TEACH Grant service obligations. As you can see, the Federal Government must have existing records of your total and permanent disability, or you must get a physician to sign off and certify your disability claim. Otherwise, you are unlikely to have your student loans or TEACH Grant service obligations forgiven under the TPD discharge program.
